Team sport is a type of athletic activity that requires the participation of multiple individuals working together as a unit and where it is inherently impossible or impractical to execute the sport as a single-player endeavor. This excludes sports with a competitive component that is not entirely dependent on team dynamics, such as mountaineering or cycling, where participants compete in relay races.

To identify a “freak” team, I had to define what made it unique in comparison to other teams. I narrowed the field to teams that achieved a string of wins or titles unmatched in their sport, which left me with 106 contenders. I then had to make some hard choices, evaluating each team’s overall legacy, the number of players on the roster at the time of its success, and whether it met certain criteria. I looked at statistics like winning percentage, wins above replacement, standard deviation from the mean, and Elo rating systems, but they didn’t provide an objective way to distinguish a true superteam.

The most important ingredient for a freak team is its ability to overcome adversity, and the best of them do so in an unstoppable manner. In this regard, the Collingwood Magpies of Australian rules football and the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball are two of the most incredible examples. They both won a record number of championships in consecutive seasons, which is arguably the most difficult feat in professional sports.

They can even have a positive influence on their academic performance. They can learn to prioritize their education and make good grades a priority in their lives. This is why it is so important to promote the benefits of team sports to young people.
