How to Write a Good News Report
News is current information about events and happenings in local, national and international affairs. News reports are also called news articles and are published in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, the Internet, and other media sources. To be considered newsworthy, an event or story must meet five criteria: it must be new, unusual, interesting, significant and about people. An event that meets all of these criteria is likely to be very big news, such as a coup d’etat or an airplane crash. Something that is not necessarily big news but is still worthy of attention is a murder or major sporting event. However, even this type of news must be reported in a way that will catch the reader’s interest.
In addition to reporting current events, the news can also provide analysis and interpretation of these events. This allows readers to understand the complexities of the issues involved and make more informed decisions. This is particularly important for political, business and social issues. News can also serve to hold individuals and governments accountable for their actions by reporting on corruption and unethical behavior.
Writing a news article starts with research on the topic, gathering as much information about the event or issue as possible. Often the main news items will appear first in the bulletin or on Page One of the newspaper and be covered in more detail than lesser stories. This is because the most important news is likely to be the most newsworthy and will attract the biggest audience. Other stories will then be buried further down the paper, or not at all. Similarly, on the Internet, it is customary for the most important news to appear on home pages before being pushed down or hidden from view. However, it is important to remember that the Internet can be a source of fake news as well as real news, and to check information thoroughly before making any decisions based on it.
