The word entertainment has a long and complex history in the English language, but its roots lie in Medieval Latin intertenere and Indo-European ten, both of which mean to hold inside. The term may refer to a number of facets of human life, from art and music to games and sports to a hospitable provision for guests’ enjoyment. But it is often a matter of taste and context: what one person considers entertaining might be considered work or cruelty by another.
